Packing Materials for Moving in Dubai: What You Need and How Much
Running out of tape at midnight, or finding a broken plate because the box was too big, is common on moving week. Most of these problems come from buying the wrong packing materials or too few of them. This guide shows what you need, how much to buy and how to use each item.
If you would rather skip the shopping, our packing and unpacking service comes with boxes, wrap and tape.
The Basic Supplies List
- Small boxes for books, tools, canned food and other heavy items.
- Medium boxes for kitchenware, shoes, toys and small appliances.
- Large boxes for bedding, pillows, towels and light clothes.
- Wardrobe boxes with a hanging bar, for dresses, suits and abayas.
- Packing paper for plates, cups and filling gaps.
- Bubble wrap for glass, mirrors, frames and screens.
- Packing tape with a tape gun. Thin or cheap tape peels off.
- Stretch wrap to hold drawers shut and wrap sofas.
- Furniture blankets or pads for tables, cabinets and wardrobes.
- Corner protectors for glass tables and mirrors.
- Markers and labels so every box says its room and contents.
- Zip bags for screws, bolts and small parts.
- Mattress covers to keep beds clean.
Choose the Right Box for Each Item
Use small boxes for anything heavy. A large box full of books is too heavy to lift and the bottom may break. Use large boxes only for light things like pillows. Medium boxes suit most of the kitchen and bathroom.
Dishes and glasses need extra care. Line the box with paper, wrap each piece on its own, and stand plates on their edge instead of laying them flat. Our guide on packing fragile items covers this step by step.
How Many Boxes Will You Need?
Every home is different, but these ranges give you a starting point:
- Studio: 15 to 25 boxes
- One bedroom: 30 to 45 boxes
- Two bedrooms: 50 to 70 boxes
- Three bedrooms: 80 to 110 boxes
- Villa with four or more bedrooms: 120 to 200 boxes
These are rough numbers. A home with many books, kitchen items or storage rooms needs more. For a closer estimate, enter your rooms in our moving box calculator. Buy about 10 percent extra, because it is easier to return a few boxes than to run out on the last day.
Where to Get Packing Materials in Dubai
- Packaging and stationery shops, and some hardware stores, sell boxes, tape and wrap.
- Online stores deliver boxes and packing kits to your door.
- Your movers can bring supplies when you book packing.
- Used boxes from shops are an option for light items only.
Compare the price of buying all the packing materials yourself with the cost of packing help. For a small flat, buying and packing alone can be cheaper. For a full home or a villa, the time you save usually matters more. You can see how we handle bigger homes on our villa movers and apartment movers pages.
Packing Tips for Dubai Weather
- Keep boxes in an air conditioned room. Heat can weaken tape, and humidity softens cardboard.
- Do not leave packed boxes in a parked car or an outdoor storeroom.
- For long storage, use plastic bins or wrapped boxes instead of plain cardboard. Our storage service is an option if there is a gap between leases.
- Wrap leather furniture in blankets, not plastic. Plastic can trap heat and moisture against the leather.
- Fill empty space in every box with paper so items do not shift during the drive.
Room by Room: What to Use
Kitchen
Medium boxes, packing paper and bubble wrap. Wrap glasses and plates one by one. Tape knives in a towel. Keep a small box of daily items for the first night.
Bedroom
Large boxes for bedding, wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes and mattress covers for the beds. Put screws from the bed frame in a zip bag and tape it to the frame.
Living room
Furniture blankets and stretch wrap for sofas and tables. Bubble wrap and corner protectors for frames, mirrors and glass tops. Wrap the TV in a blanket or use its original box.
Bathroom
Small and medium boxes. Seal bottle caps with tape and put each liquid in a zip bag in case it leaks.
Home office
Small boxes for books and files, and the original boxes for computers if you still have them. Label cables and take a photo of the setup before you unplug.
Packing Mistakes to Avoid
- Filling a box past about 15 kg.
- Using one thin strip of tape on the bottom. Tape the seam and add two strips across the sides.
- Packing heavy items on top of light ones.
- Leaving empty space inside the box.
- Skipping labels. Write the room and a short list on two sides of every box.
- Packing valuables, passports and documents in the truck. Carry them with you.

How to Seal and Label a Box
- Put a layer of crumpled paper at the bottom.
- Place the heaviest items first, then lighter ones on top.
- Fill every gap with paper until nothing moves when you shake the box.
- Close the flaps and run tape along the middle seam, then add a strip across each end.
- Write the room, a short list of contents and the word fragile if needed on the top and on two sides.
- Mark the boxes you need first, such as the kitchen and bedroom, with a colour or a number.
Save Money Without Cutting Corners
You do not need to buy everything new. Towels, blankets, pillows and clothes can wrap fragile items, which cuts the amount of paper and bubble wrap you buy. Suitcases and laundry baskets can carry soft items. Spend your money on strong tape and good boxes for heavy things, because a broken box costs more than a better one.
After the move, keep the sturdy boxes you want to reuse and flatten the rest. Your building may have a spot for cardboard, so ask the management office.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use free boxes from shops?
You can, but check them first. Used boxes may be weak, wet or dirty, and they can carry pests. Use them for light items only, and buy new boxes for books, dishes and anything heavy.
How heavy should a box be?
Keep most boxes under about 15 kg so one person can lift them safely. Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in large boxes.
Do movers bring their own boxes and tape?
It depends on the company and the service you book. When you book packing with King Movers Dubai, we bring boxes, wrap and tape. Tell us the number of rooms so we bring enough.
How early should I buy supplies?
Buy them one to two weeks before your move. That gives you time to pack room by room without rushing, and to buy more if you run short.
Is bubble wrap better than paper?
Each has a use. Bubble wrap protects glass, screens and frames. Plain packing paper is better for plates, cups and filling empty space in a box.
